Digital Residencies – 2021 Edition

The second edition of Residenze Digitali, the project promoted by the Artistic Residency Centre of Tuscany (ArmuniaCapoTrave/Kilowatt) in partnership with AMAT, Anghiari Dance Hub, ATCL Lazio for Spazio Rossellini, the Artistic Residency Centre of Emilia-Romagna (L’arboreto – Teatro Dimora di Mondaino / La Corte Ospitale), the Teatro della Tosse Luzzati Foundation in Genoa and ZONA K in Milan, selected 7 projects to be assisted for seven months by the partner structures and the three tutors Anna Maria Monteverdi, Federica Patti and Laura Gemini. At the end of the process, the projects had the chance to be showcased to the general public within La Settimana delle Residenze Digitali, the Digital Residency Week, from the 22nd to the 28th of November 2021.

Whatever Happens in a Screen Stays in a Screen

An inquiry into image transformation and the meaning of image itself, through the use of green screen. The project aims to realise a semi-cinematic work carried out with remote performers and created entirely from home using a computer, resulting in an online mini-film.

Choreographer and dancer Chiara Taviani works as an independent artist between France and Italy, having won various awards; in 2020 she was selected as a AerowavesTwenty20′ artist.

Giacomo Lilliù, Collettivo ØNAR and Lapis Niger

WOE – Westage of Events

A non-linear, characterless tale – inspired by Martin Vaughn-James’ groundbreaking graphic novel from 1975 – where the only thing remaining of humans is their absence. WOE reshapes the desolate landscape of a graphically developed virtual reality environment into an infinite three-dimensional desert, to explore the digital territory that has become part of our everyday life, yet hides vast grey areas.

Actor and director Giacomo Lilliù is the founder of the multidisciplinary group Collettivo ØNAR. Napo Lapis Niger is both an illustrator and one half of Uochi Toki.

Jan-Voxel---Digital-Residencies-2021

Jan Voxel (Lorenzo Belardinelli, Cinzia Pietribiasi and Lidia Zanelli)

The Critters Room #experience

The central characters of the projects are PM10 fine dust particles measured by self-built and free-access control units, and microscope slides that have been exposed to the air, catalogued and micro-photographed for the performance. The Critters Room is an interactive web-application that will allow viewers to “visualise the air”, to listen to the sound of critters, and observe the creatures as they tell us about the end of the obsessively (and toxically) human-centred era.

Jan Voxel is an informal group created in 2019 and formed by physicist and computer scientist Lorenzo Belardinelli, performer and director Cinzia Pietribiasi and dancer and set designer Lidia Zanelli. The project is in collaboration with Compagnia Pietribiasi/Tedeschi, and with the support of Ateliersi Bologna and Officina Leo van Moric in Parma.

Lorenzo-Montanini---Digital-Residencies-2021

Lorenzo Montanini with Simona Di Maio and Isabel Albertini

Into The Woods

Ten short video stories taken from Calvino’s Fiabe Italiane: inspired by object theatre, miniature worlds are recreated through a 4k camera, a 360˚ camera and a Lidar scanner, in order to reconstruct the fairy tale sceneries in 3D and explore the possibility of also seeing the story in VR.

Lorenzo Montanini is a director, educator and performer; he has directed more than thirty shows for theatres and festivals in Europe and America. Simona Di Maio is an actress, educator and director. She is the co-founder of the company Il Teatro nel Baule and co-artistic director of the family theatre season at the Teatro Bellini in Naples. Isabel Albertini works with materials; she has a background in contemporary jewellery making and cultural management.

Margherita-Landi---Digital-Residencies-2021

Margherita Landi and Agnese Lanza

Dealing with Absence

The project investigates the relationship between body and technology in choreographic and physical terms, exploring the learning of a physical language through a VR visor to create a choreography originated from a 2D video montage repositioned in 360-degrees, alternating with specially-made immersive videos.

Margherita Landi is a media artist and anthropologist, Agnese Lanza is a dancer and choreographer.

Sàl

The continuation of a journey crossing the horizon that separates conscious perception from waking reality to realise a multi-layered artistic performance, an all-encompassing trans-media experience.

fuse* is an independent studio and production company founded in 2007 which explores the expressive possibilities given by the creative use of digital technologies, with the goal of interpreting the complexity of human and natural phenomena.

Mara-Oscar-Cassiani---Digital-Residencies-2021

Mara Oscar Cassiani

I Am Dancing In A Room

The project’s title is inspired by Alvin Lucier’s sound art masterpiece “I Am Sitting In A Room”, where the author observes how a track decomposes as it gets repeated on a loop inside a room; similarly ‘I Am Dancing In A Room’ meditates on the eternal reverberation of gestures online, from one user’s room to another, joined solely by the continuing of the same choreography.

Mara Oscar Cassiani is a wi-fi based artist working in the fields of performance, choreography and digital media, recipient of the 2019 Digital Award by Roma Europa Festival.
